Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s New CEO and Board Chair Look to Create a Strong Future Together
Baltimore--During Girl Scouts of Central Maryland’s (GSCM) May 7th annual meeting, members met their new CEO, Dr. Shernette Grant, and the slate of newly elected board members, including Board Chair, Darlene B. Smith, Ph.D. Both Grant and Smith have been educational leaders. Grant is the former Director of Innovative Programs for Broward County Public Schools in Florida. Immediately prior to coming to Baltimore to serve as GSCM’s CEO, Grant served as Chief Program Officer at Junior Achievement of South Florida. Darlene B. Smith is a former Professor of Marketing at the University of Baltimore where she also served as Executive Vice President and Provost.
Smith, who previously served on the GSCM board, begins her official term as Chair of the Board on June 1st when former Chair, Julie Lenzer, retires after 10 years of board service. Grant noted that the board of directors is comprised of a dedicated team of business and community leaders who are committed to uplifting girls. “We all have a love for girls,” Grant said and added, “Together we can reimagine a strong future for girls and the council.”
Other new members of the board elected at the meeting include Diane Boettcher, a US Navy veteran, and Tracy Imm an award-winning communications professional who for the past decade has taught communications at McDaniel College. Additionally, two Girl Scouts were elected to the board: 10th grader Anika Verma and 11th grader Gina Dhaliwal. Girl Scouts of Central Maryland has invited girl members to seek board positions for the past 10 years as another way for them to develop leadership skills.
