Any age level will enjoy these hands-on STEM activities that can be done using everyday household items. Brownies will complete all steps of the Brownie Home Scientist Badge
Step 1: Kitchen Chemist - Growing Rock Candy
Materials needed
- 1 cup of water
- 4 cups of sugar
- Food coloring
- 1 glass jar
- String
- Wooden skewer or pencil
- Stove top
- 1 medium sized pot
- Wooden or plastic spoon
Step 2: Static Electricity - Water Bending
Materials needed
- 1 medium sized balloon
- A sink
Step 3: Dive into Density - Density Tower
Materials needed
- 1 clear cylinder (as similar to a graduated cylinder as possible, a clear glass can work)
- 6 small cups (paper bathroom cups work best)
- 1-2 ounces of syrup (corn syrup or maple syrup)
- 1-2 ounces of milk
- 1-2 ounces of water
- 1-2 ounces of dish soap
- 1-2 ounces of vegetable oil
- 1-2 ounces of rubbing alcohol
- Food coloring
Step 4: Make Something Bubble Up - Balloon Blow Up
Materials needed
- 1 empty soda bottle
- 1 small bottle of vinegar
- Baking soda
- 1 medium sized balloon
- 1 spoon
Step 5: Play with Science - Oobleck
Materials needed
- A mixing bowl
- 1-2 cups of corn starch
- 1 cup of water
- Food coloring

Any age level can complete steps to earn the Do it Yourself badge at their level. Seniors will earn the Room Makeover badge.
Step 1: Create an inspiration board

Step 2: Paint Something - Fairy Garden Rocks
Materials
- paint (your choice of color)
- rocks (different shapes and sizes) from outside/ garden, or you can purchase
Step 3: Sew or Glue Something - Fairy House
Materials
- popsicle sticks, wooden dowels, or wood birdhouse or other structure
- glue
Step 4: Redo something - Natural Tie-Dye
Materials
- old/ white cotton pillowcase
- rubber bands
- water
- bucket
- dried black beans
Step 5: Build Something - String and Nail Art
Materials
- tree circle or other wood items you can hammer nails into

- string
Thursday: The Art of Scrapbooking
Let’s create a scrapbook! This GSCM Patch Packet is geared toward Cadettes to Ambassadors but all girls can get crafty and make a scrapbook. Check out the Scrapbooking Interest Project Award patch packet. Submit photos of your scrapbooks, and we'll share them as part of a "digital" GSCM Scrapbook on our Facebook Page!
