Baltimore—Girl Scouts of Central Maryland will honor the professional accomplishments and community contributions of their 2021 Distinguished Women honorees: Maria J. Darby, Chief Operating Officer, Keswick; Dr. Frances Draper, Publisher, Afro-American Newspapers; Cheryl Mickel, Portfolio Manager, T.RowePrice; Dr. Kim Schatzel, President, Towson University; and Doris Zografos, President, Ease Painting and Construction, during a virtual celebration on July 22, 2021. The program begins at 6:00 pm. Tickets for this annual fundraiser can be purchased at gscm.org/dw. Early bird pricing is in effect through June 11, 2021. Proceeds from the event support leadership programs for girls in grades K-12 residing in central Maryland.

Each of the honorees exemplify the qualities that Girl Scouts hopes to instill in every girl--courage, confidence and character. To that end, five high school age Girl Scouts are selected to spend a day with an honoree to get an up-close and personal view of women’s leadership in action, an experience that helps them envision their future as leaders. On a national level, Girl Scouts serves as the pipeline for women leaders:

  • 56% of women in the 117th Congress are Girl Scout alumnae
  • 71% of current female senators are Girl Scout alumnae
  • 53% of female delegates and representatives in the House of Representatives are Girl Scout alumnae
  • Five of nine current female governors are Girl Scout alumnae
  • Every female Secretary of State in U.S. history is a Girl Scout or Girl Guide alum: Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton

In addition to WYPR, Girl Scouts is proud to have three of the Baltimore area female-led news entities as their media sponsors for this event: Baltimore Business Journal, The Daily Record and the Afro-American Newspapers.
