Girl Scouts of Central Maryland has taken no local legal action against Boy Scouts. Our national organization, Girl Scouts of the USA, took legal action to protect the Girl Scout mission and brand and prevent confusion in the marketplace about the difference between Girl Scouts’ and Boy Scouts’ programs for girls. Girl Scouts of the USA, has primary oversight over our brand assets and intellectual property, and brought the action against Boy Scouts of America.
This action is what any organization or business would do to protect its brand. Defending our mission and brand serves to protect girls and their parents/caregivers from confusion about Girl Scouts, including what we stand for and who we serve. We understand that some in our Movement, including our amazing, loyal, and committed volunteers, might be feeling conflicted by this development—but what GSUSA is doing stems from an unwavering commitment to advocating for our girls and their families and the communities we serve.
Because the national office is undertaking these legal proceedings, individual councils have limited information and, at this time, cannot elaborate on details concerning this legal matter.
