Volunteers on Volunteering
Lula Sessoms
“I think people who help others, especially those with little power, are totally enriched by it,” proclaimed Lula Sessoms, a 14-year volunteer. Before working with the program, prison and the mothers in them really meant nothing to her. “Now, my life will never be the same, and the people that I have met will never be the same,” she declared. “I realized that these people are humans who have had a bad turn in their lives...When we treat people with respect and kindness, God loves you a little more.”
Angela Jarrad Fuentes
Angela Jarrad Fuentes, a Latin dance and ballet instructor for the Royal Ballet Studio in Severna Park has a passion for teaching that sparked an interest to teach girls dance. “The best part of working with the girls was introducing them to dances they had never seen like the Salsa and Merengue.” She added, “at the same time the dances gave the Latina girls pride in their culture and heritage. Through dancing and performing [the girls] gained self-esteem.
Gail Edwards
Gail has been a volunteer at Harford Area Day Camp for over 10 years. “Many of our adults who volunteer work full time and take a week off of work to spend time at Day Camp. They do so to be with their daughters and they enjoy the week just as much as the campers.”
