Frequently Asked Questions:
What is it?
The Wild Things @ Conowingo Junior Encampment is the third biennial Junior Encampment sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Central Maryland. The encampment is open to all GSCM Bridging Brownies and Juniors. The event is being held on the Chimney Trail side of Camp Conowingo in Cecil County, one of GSCM’s outdoor properties, from April 30 - May 2, 2010. The encampment will be a fun-filled weekend of activities including badge work, games, campfires, flag ceremonies, crafts and of course S.W.A.P.s.

What are the accommodations?
Where will we be sleeping? Are there Units available?
Each troop will be assigned a plot for tent camping depending on the size of their troop. Troops need to bring their own tents to stay in during the encampment. There will be platform tent units to house a Juliette unit for those girls who are not affiliated with a troop.
Do we need to bring our own food?
Will we have to prepare food while we are there?
All food will be prepared for the encampment and will be served to the participants. The meals that will be provided include breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday as well as breakfast on Sunday. Snacks will also be provided during designated breaks. Troops are encouraged to eat dinner on Friday prior to arrival.

What badges will we be working on during the encampment?
The girls will have the opportunity to work on the following Junior badges throughout the weekend: Art to Wear, Theater and Adventure Sports. The girls will be sent home with proof of what requirements were met towards completion of each badge so that they will be able to acquire the badges from their troop or Council Store.

What does the $40 registration fee cover?
The registration fee covers the cost of the tent site, 4 meals and snacks, a keepsake of the event, supplies for badges and crafts, and a Junior Encampment patch.

How many adult participants can come? Do we need a Camp Certified person or first aid person?
Every troop is required to come with the appropriate Safety Wise ratios (1:8 for Grades 4-5). It is strongly encouraged that each troop also comes with a Camp Certified person and their own First Aid certified person. However, there will be many adults at the encampment, as well as a specific first aider located in Friendship Circle, so if you do not have these people available, please plan on attending anyway. There is no maximum number of adults per troop that can attend but every adult is expected to volunteer for at least one shift during the weekend. The cost per adult is $20.00 and if they desire an encampment patch, it is an additional $2.00, if they are still available after given out to the girls. Please bring additional patch money for adults to the encampment and they will be sold to adults if available.

When does registration open and close? How do we register?
Registration for the encampment is officially open. You can register by downloading the Junior Encampment registration forms from the camp section of the GSCM website at: www.gscm.org/camp.html; you can contact Abby Neyenhouse, Outdoor Program Specialist at aneyenhouse@gscm.org for an electronic version of the forms; or you can call Connie Adams, Program Registrar, at 410-358-9711 ext. 238. Can girls share tents with adults?
Can men attend this event? What about older girl volunteers?
Girls can share a tent with female adults as long as there are at least two female adults in the tent with the girls. Males are allowed to attend the encampment and there will be a separate male unit with a designated toilet facility that is located in a different area than the girls. Older girls are encouraged to attend as volunteers and will be assigned in their own unit separate from the Junior area.

What bathroom facilities are available? Will there be showers?
There are permanent latrines located near the tent camping area. In addition, port-a-potties will be brought in for the encampment weekend along with hand sanitizing areas. There will not be access to shower facilities.

What time is Check-in on Friday?
What time does everything end on Sunday?

Where do we park?
Can we park at our tent site?
