Girl Scouting at the Waxter Juvenile Detention Center is a program for teenage females awaiting trial, placement in foster care, group homes, or rehabilitative services and is designed to help them develop strong ethics, sound decision-making capabilities and self-esteem. Last year the program served over 200 girls. Two groups meet on an alternating basis every Monday afternoon. The meetings are run by Girl Scouts of Central Maryland volunteer Linda Nape. Guest speakers and consultants join the meeting discussions. One meeting per month specifically addresses drug and alcohol awareness and prevention. The GSCM Young Mothers Program is also provided for girls and young women at the facility.
Linda Nape was honored for her dedication and commitment to improving the lives of these girls by the Baltimore Ravens and received their Community Quarterback Award, which included a donation to Girl Scouts of Central Maryland.
