Girl Scout Troop No. 568 of Crofton, Md., has a lot to be grateful for this year. So for Thanksgiving, they decided to help out someone less fortunate than themselves. But what to do and where to turn for inspiration? How about the Food Network? That’s exactly what our girls did.

As a Thanksgiving project, seven members of our troop spent the Monday before Thanksgiving making a feast for a local senior citizen who lives alone. The girls made Rachael Ray’s Pressed Herb and Spices Turkey Breast and her Apple and Onion Stuffin’ Muffins. They whipped up Paula Dean’s Fancy Green Beans and Tyler Florence’s Mashed Potatoes. And no meal would be complete without dessert – especially Thanksgiving – so the girls made an apple pie and a pumpkin pie.
The next day, our troop delivered the meal to Annie G. in Annapolis, Md. The meal was served in a basket, with handmade placemats.

Over two days, the lessons our girls learned were invaluable. Through measuring and mashing, mixing and chopping, the members of the troop gained important skills in the kitchen. And through cooking, they learned that the greatest gift they can give is their time and effort for someone who needs it more.

Be sure to look at Service Projects for more great ideas about opportunities for your troop throughout the whole year.

In September 2007, Girl Scout Troop 1973 camped on the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey and participated in Morey's Piers Beach Jam. These Girl Scouts earned an oceanography badge while participating in an Oceanography workshop presented by the Wetlands Institute. The Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor, NJ promotes the conservation and preservation of coastal ecosystems. The girls earned a beachcomber badge by learning about tides, ways to protect and care for beaches and the seashore, and learned about laws that are in place to protect marine life. The girls also helped support the Community Food Bank of New Jersey while earning a pin for Good Turn for America. Additionally, they had a lot of fun dolphin-watching, going on a speed boat tour, enjoying a hayride on the water’s edge, and having fun on all the rides. Troop Leader Christie M. says that they had an incredible time and will definitely be going back.
