Atlanta, GA
Deadline: April 25, 2008
Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Web Site: http://www.cdc.gov/gcc/exhibit/camp.htm

The CDC/Emory Disease Detective Camp is an academic public health day camp for upcoming high school juniors and seniors. Throughout the course of five days, campers will become disease detectives and learn first-hand how the CDC safeguards the nation's health. During the initial application phase, applicants will be selected based on the "Getting to Know You" questions on the application. The second phase will consist of a lottery system. CDC's main campus is located in Atlanta, Georgia. There is no cost associated with attending the camp, but campers will need to pay for their own lunches, accommodation, and transportation. Camp sessions will take place between July 7-11 and July 21-25.

Who can apply?
The CDC Disease Detective Camp is open to motivated students who will be high school juniors and seniors during the 2008-2009 school years. CDC's lab building safety requirements require applicants to be 16 years old at the time of the camp to enter certain buildings on CDC's campus, so applicants must be 16 years old by the first day of the camp (July 7 or July 21, depending on the camp dates you choose). Former President Bill Clinton partnered with the American Heart Association after his heart surgery to address the issue of heart health in the U.S. After exploring options together, it was decided that one of the most important issues facing Americans today is the epidemic of childhood obesity, which can lead to early heart disease, diabetes and other health problems. Co-led by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the goal of the Alliance is to stop the nationwide increase in childhood obesity by 2010 and to take bold, innovative steps to help all children live longer and healthier lives. The Alliance is having a positive impact focusing on its four key initiatives, the Healthy Schools Program, Industry, Healthcare, and Kids' Movement.

The Famous Book Club

Posting for a Girl Scout troop: We are Senior Girl Scouts and we are working on a literacy project. We are creating "The Famous Book Club". Our idea is that if there was a "club" where famous people could tell everyone what their favorite childhood book was that it might inspire kids to pick up that book just because their role model, hero or favorite celebrity read it and enjoyed it. Each famous person would have to answer three questions:

  1. What was your favorite book you read as a child?
  2. Why was this your favorite book?
  3. Can we include you in our Famous Book Club with your picture, a small bio about you and your answers to # 1 & # 2 ?

We are going to take the answers and create "celebrity pages" to put in a book and have the book available at every Chicago Public Library. We are hoping that through your e-list, there are many Girl Scout Leaders who know a famous politician, celebrity, sports figure, etc. If they could pass on the 3 questions on and our Leader's information below to send in their answers, we would greatly appreciate it.

All your answers, along with a photo and a small bio, can be sent to: Girl Scout Leader: Ms. Bernadette Colletti, bmc8754@aol.com

Thank you,
Matie & Ashley
