First Aid/CPR- American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS)
The health and safety of girls is a top priority in Girl Scouts. GSCM offers a variety of courses to meet the
needs of the volunteer who will act as the troop first aider. A first aider is an adult 18 years or older who
holds current certification in both first aid and CPR. For those working with girls under the age of nine,
pediatric or child CPR is required in addition to adult CPR. Other course providers, in addition to the AAOS,
which will meet this requirement, can be found in Safety-Wise on page 37. Refer to Safety-Wise for
activities that require the presence of a first aider. Activity check points in Safety-Wise will state the level
of first aid needed for specific program activities.
Level 2 First aiders are required at events with more than 200 participants, and when activity checkpoints
found in Safety-Wise indicate a Level 2 first aider is needed.
Physicians, physician's assistants, nurse practitioners, RN's, LPN's, paramedics, military medics, dentists and emergency medical technicians (EMT) may serve as a troop first aider (level 1 or 2) if their license/certification is current and they are comfortable with their emergency medical skills. They do not have to take additional training.
NOTE: It is recommended that an adult volunteer not serve as both the troop/group First Aider and the
Troop Camper on the same trip.
